MR. STERLING SILENT

Extensive "cuts" in the railway services are foreshadowed in a special message to the "Auckland Star" from Wellington, published on Saturday. The message slated: "It is understood that drastic- cuts will be made in the Dominion railway services if- the- linihvay Commission adopts recommendations which it is believed will.be made by the General Manager, Mr. 11. H. 'Sterling. The 'cuts' which may bo proposed include the abolition of: (1) Wellington-Auckland Daylight Limited express. (2) Wellington-New Plymouth night express. ■ (3) Christchurch-Invcrcargill- night express. "In addition, it may be recommended that several branch lino services be abolished and that others be. severely, curtailed. . "Some of the branch lines on which the economy axe may fall are in the South Island, but in the North Island the Waiuku service is mentioned as one likely to be abolished, and tho Ruakura-Cambridge service, may ba very considerably reduced." . The message. was referred to the General Manager, but Mr. St6rlinj; stated that he had nothing whatever to say for publication. "What I'have to say will be said to the Minister," stated Mr. Sterling.
