SOCIETY CHANGES NAME

The "annual meeting of St. Thomas's Horticultural Society was held recently in the Clubroom. There was a fair attendance,- over which Mr. Salmon presided. The secretary, Mr. M'Lean, read the annual report. Three shows had been held, each of which had been a success. There had been a large number of entries on each occasion, although in some sec- > ions more competition was desirable, par- ' ' in the Home Industries. Startup, .a member of long standing and one wo had given great assistance to the society. Several lectures given during the winter months had been much appreciated. The monthly competition had sustained interest, the trophy kindly presented by Mr. and Mrs. M'Gregor doubtless being an incentive to members. The society extended its thanks to the controller of the Zoo Gm'dcns, to Mr. Weslbury and Mr. L. Joues for their displays made at the various shows; also to all those who assisted in other.ways. The hon. treasurer (Mr. J. W. Salmon) presented the audited balance-sheet, which showed a satisfactory state o£ finance, there being a credit balance on the year's transactions. Both the report and balance-sheet were adopted after commendatory references had been voiced by several members upon the work of the secretary and treasurer. A notice of motion to change the name of the society was then fully considered, and it was unanimously decided that the name of the society should be altered from "St. Thomas's" to "Wellington South," so as to include all the territory of the. electorate of that name. A representative from the Island Bay Society-at-tended and signified its willingness- to amalgamate.
