ORIENTAL AND UNIVERSITY.

.. Jiever in want of solid forwards, usually possessing sound defensive backs who are well versed in the art of "spoiling," but whose attacking ability is not very apparent. Oriental when accounting for University at Kelburn Park by 3 points* to nil played their traditional game. University, realising that possession. of the ball was everything to them, again adopted the three-four scrum,, with no little degree of success. However, with Oriental's rearguard lining close up and their forwards coming away in a solid phalanx the 'students were not allowed to do a great deal with the ball. In short, University's endeavour to make the game fast and open was quite frustrated by the spoiling tactics of Oriental. The game was devoid of bright play. The Oriental forwards, with Cave, Tasker, and Hill prominent, played their usual solid game. t The teams were: — . Oriental.—Lochore; Kellv, Wilkinson, Foster.; Davies, Packnatz; Jaggers; Hill; H. Smith, Tasker, Graham, Cave, Woodward, M'Millan, Biggar. University.—Black; Hislop, Dickinson, Mackay; Irwin, Mackenzie; Mulvihill; Edgar; Blakeiiey, Beaumont, Barker, Hart,. Hope, Diedrich, Blacker. Shortly after the kick-off, a good punt by Mackenzie put University'on the attack, but bad handling nullified the efforts! of their backs, and from the ensuing ruck Hill broke away. De?ultory play of 'an ,even nature ensued till Mulvihill, using the blind side, sent Mackay off on a fine run which amost achieved success. Again the University backs functioned; tlie ball swung along the line; n long reverse pnsH was accepted, but Deiclricli fumbled uudei' the posts arid a sure try was lost. Shortly afterwards Hislop was nearly acrosd following -a passing rush. University' were consistently hooking the ball, and ,Mulvihill was giving his backs every opportunity. The first spell ended with University on attack. On resuming a strong run by Mackenzie put the Greens within . striking distance, but here the Oriental forwards took a hand, and a slashing rush, led by Cave and Tasker, transferred play to the other end of the field. Mackenzie was using the line-kick to advantage, and Irwin took a hand in two movements which had the Oriental defence rattled. Following a vim by the Oriental forwards Jaggprs sent his back* away, but Edgar smothered a pass and gained about forty yard? with the ball at his feet. Mackenzie sold the dummy and play EaS 53 'i^s Oriental line. However,,

the defence held, and Oriental's forwards led their side out of danger. University were penalised following a scrum, and Lochore mad-; no mistake with an easy kick. Oriental 3, University 0. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score unchanged. Mr. H. 11. Anslow was the referee.
