LABOUR'S VOICE
COMING- LEGISLATION
CONFERENCE CONVENED
As soon as the Government's proposals in reference to unemployment insurance are made known —probably some little time after the opening of Parlia-ment-—an open conference 'of trades unions will be held in Wellington. Unions have already been requested to appoint their delegates and .to hold them in readiness to proceed to "Wellington as soon as the date of the conference is made 'known.
A circular has been sent to the various trades union organisations in Now Zealand over the name of Messrs. A. Cook and L. Glover. In this it is stated:
"At the proposed conference there will be several very important matters, which vitally affect the welfare of the working class, to be discussed, and oil which it is very desirable that a unanimous decision should be arrived at in. order that Labour's representatives in Parliament shall be in a position to fight for an objective with the full approval of the industrial labour movement. ■
"Foremost amongsj the matters to be dealt with will be the Unemployment Committee's report, which has been presented to the Government. This report has not yet been discussed by the industrial labour movement as a whole. You will, therefore, realise how very important it is for some definite decision to be arrived at with as little delay as possible. "Mr. W. Veiteh, Minister of Labour, has already intimated that he will be introducing an Unemployment Insurance Bill during the coming session, and it is the intention to have the conference assemble at the earliest possible moment after Mr. Veiteh brings down his Bill." Since the circular was written Mr. Veiteh has vacated the portfolio of Labour, which is bow held by the Hon. S. G. Smith, whose duty it will be to submit the legislation to Parliament.*
