MINES REOPEN ON MONDAY
STATEMENT BY- OWNERS
United rrose Assoclatton-By Electric Tele crarli-'Copyrluht SYDNEY, 29th May. All the Northern collieries will reopen for work next Monday. A statement to this effect was made by the chairman of the Northern Proprietors' Association to-day.
Iv reporting the decision of the miners' lodges to rosunio, the "Sydney Morning Herald" said on 16th May that despite the heartfelt satisfaction of most northern people that the dispute had reached its last stage, there was little jubilation through tho coalfields. The miners mostly felt that they were going- back beaten, and .rcpresentatm-s of inino-owning interests \yerc mainiy concerned with what trade would bo available for the reopened pits. The chief explanation of the reversal of previous decisions was tho serious financial 'position of the federation, tho men believing that it was better _to return to work with their organisation intact than to be forced to resume with the federation broken and penniless.
..Replying to Mr. Walmsley in the Legislative Assembly, the Minister for Mines (Mr. Weaver) said that tho indications were for an early resumption of work in the principal mines on the northern field. When agreement was definitely reached, there would be no occasion for the Government to continue its operations at Rothbury.
