GILBERTIAN TRIAL
LISBON, 12th May.
Although the alleged frauds were committed in 1925, a special tribunal has just commenced the trial of Antonio Bandeira, former Portuguese Minister at The Hague, his brother Jose, and also Alvea Reis, who,are charged with circulating an unauthorised issue of Bank of Portugal notes in connection with tho establishment of the Angola Bank. The trial was opened in tho military court, which was too small to accommodate the 138 witnesses and numerous counsel. The Judge pleaded for patience and went out in search of addi-1 tional chairs. Later he presided, draw- j ing lots for jurymen from 36 judges, which duty his own nine-year-old son carried out. The prosecution read a document in which four signatories, in-j eluding Reis and Jose Bandeira, alleg-1 cdly agreed after other deductions to divide the remainder of the proceeds of the fraud equally. The caso had barely begun when the Judge announced that the military required the Court to be adjourned.
