Jack Hayes, the proprietor of a beer and gambling "joint" in Clark street, heard Rumours about a coming robbery and as a precaution invited the police to receive his unwelcome guests.

Five officers ambushed the bandits, and when the smoke of the shooting had cleared, Hayes, himself, and two invading gunmen were dead, while Joseph Altmeier, the special investigator for the- district attorney, who directed the police, was seriously hurt.
