KEEN WEATHER

MA2JY HARD TBOSTS

Although an extensive 'anti-cyclone covers the greater part of Australia and extends across the Tasman Sea to northern New Zealand, low pressurb waves passing along the southern edge of it and crossing southern New Zealand continue to affect the Dominion's weather. Another of these waves crossed last night, one effect being the change from southerly to westerly or north-westerly winds from Cook Strait southward. As a whole during the last 24 hours winds have been less strong than they were, with the exception of the Foveaux Strait region. At Bluff this morning a westerly to northwesterly gale- was reported. Although fair conditions have ruled generally, the weather has had a tendency to be changeable, and -a v few- light and scattered showers have fallen. Temperatures have remained I'ery low, and. severe frosts were numerous in both Islands last night.

Showery conditions early yesterday morning in.Auckland gave place later in the day to finer weather, but temperatures were keen with a fresh southwest wind. In Wellington yesterday's weather was somewhat cold and changeable, but no rain fell. Three degrees of frost were recorded last night at Kelburn, but on the flat and in the Hutt Valley the frost was more severe than that. It was the coldest night so far this year. Christehurch also had its coldest night of the present winter, a' very hard frost following a cold and sunny day. Occasional light showers fell in Dunedin yesterday, the weather there during the day being cold and cloudy.

The forecast issued at noon to-day promises a continuance of the present type of weather. Moderate southerly winds may be expected to prevail north" of New Plymouth and Napier. ■ Elsewhere moderate to strong westerly winds will back later to the south and increase in force. Changeable, and at times showery, weather may be anti-. eipated. The coming night will b« very /cold with many frosts.
