Arbitration regarding site

In the chairman's report for the year ■ ended'3lst March, 1930, presented to the Wellington Fire Board yesterday, Mr. N. Nelson presiding, it was stated that agreement was come to with the City Council for the transfer of the Constable Street Fire Station property at a. value of £20,----500. The City Council still declined to transfer the present Central Fire Station site to the Fire Board, and it had been decided to go to arbitration on this.matter in accordance with the provisions of the Fire Brigades Act. The meeting decided to submit to the City Council the name of Mr. A. D. Thomson. The matter would, in deference to the wishes of the Town Clerk, be hold over until the return of the "Mayor (Mr;S,A. Troup) from his vacation. It was stated that the Northland Fire Station would probably be completed and ready to take over in six weeks' time. The chairman's report stated that during the year the Shand Mason steam fire engine was'disposed of to the Public Works Department. A motor-cycle was purchased to replace a machine damaged beyond repair.. A; modern telephone fire alarm system'will be installed very shortly at Miramar, and it is hoped ■to follow within a few'months with? a similar installation at Northland and adjacent districts. The fire brigade/ employees in Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin sought a Dominion award, but subsequently, abandoned this proceeding. After some nego* tiations a new agreement for the Wellington Fire Brigade employees was* finalised before the Conciliation Commissioner. The board ceased to administer the corps of theatre fire protection watchmen as from Ist March last. Contributions from insurance companies, etc., to the board's funds for the year to 31st March last totalled £15,000, the perceutagn of contributions to premiums being 7.5645 per cent. ■ Reference to the valued work of the secretary. (Mr. H. S. Fairchild) was made, and it was decided to increase his salary.
