SEQUEL TO MOTORING ACCIDENT

Attracted by the sound, of the breaking of glass near the tramway shelter shed in Post Office square on the evening of 25th April, a constable went to investigate, and as a result George Crosbic Godfrey was charged, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court to-day with being intoxicated while in charge of a motor-car. He was further charged with having no driver's licence, and through his counsel, Mr. EC. F. O'Leary, pleaded guilty to both charges. Sub-Inspector Lopdell said that the defendant .had run' into the tramway waiting shed, and when the constable arrived ho was trying to back his car out. He was taken to the station, where he was. seen by several other police officers, who also'considered lie was'not. in a fit condition to drive a car. Later he was allowed to go home in charge of a friend. i Mr. O'Leary said that he could add very little except to point out that the defendant's condition was not such that he would have been arrested if he had been a pedestrian. Without comment the Magistrate fined the defendant £20 and the costs, and debarred ' him from obtaining a licence .f or twelve months. On the charge of having no licence the defendant was fined £2.-
