Bishop Brodie, <>' Christohurch, returned from Auckland .to-day. He leaves for the South to-night. While . in Auckland, Bishor) Brodie attended, the celebration of the golden jubilee of the Rev. Brother Basil, first director of Sacred Heart College, Auckland. Mr. E.. C. Gamble, choirmaster for eleven years at the Karori Methodist Church, who is relinquishing his position owing to his appointment as postal agent on the Ban Francisco mail steamer, was recently presented with a travelling rug at a social, evening. Mr., E. B. Ash, on behalf of the church trustees, and the Rev. J. Dennis, on behalf of the choir, expressed appreciation, of Mr. Gamble's services to the church. A private cablegram received in. .Thames from Holla, Missouri, states that Mr. S. R. B. Cooke, a. graduate, of the Otago University,., holder of a^ Thames School of Mines scholarship," and son of Mr. C. E. Cooke, - editor of the Thames "Star," has won his master of science degree in metallurgy. The Carnegie Institute of Technology ,at Pittsburgh has .granted him a fellowship for two years, says an exchange, so that he can secure his doctor's degree. Mr. Cooke loft Auckland for America in Juno of la^t year. ■ Mr. L. J. Schmidt, who was 'recently appointed New Zealand Trade Commissioner to Australia, leaves for Sidney by the Marama this afternoon to take up his new duties. Mr; Schmidt was farewelled yesterday by members of the Wellington Commercial Travellers an? Warehousemen's Association.
