MATCH V. DERBYSHIRE
FIRST COUNTY TO MAKE 200
(Received 22nd May, 9 a.m.)
CHESTERFIELD, 21st May
In an atmosphere resembling a country show rather than a .first-class cricket match, the Australians commenced their game against Derbyshire at Queen's Park this morning. The ground is approached through beautiful gardens. •
The following are the teams: — * .'Australia: Richardson, Kippax, Bradman, Fairfax, Ponsford, M'Cabe, Oldfield, Hornibrook, Wall, Jackson, and Hurwood. ■ Derbyshire: G. .11. Jackson (captain), N. M. Ford, Storer, Lee, Alderman, Worthington, Hutchinson, Townsend, Slater, Elliott, and Mitchell. Jackson won the toss and'decided to bat. The wicket was slow, the weather fine-but mostly dull, and the outfield also damp and "slow. Wall and Fairfax opened the bowling. Storer and Worthington saved Derbysiliiro from a rout at 'the hands of Hornibrook and Wall. Storer batted patiently throughout, but Ford rattled up 33 in forty-five minutes. Worth.iug'tou also batted brightly, the small ground making tho boundaries plentiful. Two hnndred runs appeared after 215 minutes' play, Derby being tho first county to make that'total against tiio visitors. Wall and ' Fairfax early proved innocuous on a lifeless wicket, and it was left to Hornibrook to get the wickets. Wall came on again with tho new ball, and quickly dismissed Worthington and Mitchell. ' Ponsford, and Jackson scored 54 in tho remaining eighty-iiyo minutes. Tho county's bowling was ac'cunite and good fielding kept down th.c runs. Both men batted tediously in tho fading light, the crowd ironically applauding occasional runs. Many opportunities of scoring were lost. •Following aro the details: — DERBYSHIRE. , i *" .First Innings.
