ENGLISHMEN'S HEROISM
CHOLERA OUTBREAK IN
FOREST
The heroism of two Englishmen in a cholera-stricken section of the teak forests in northern Siam deserves a place on the annals of British valour (says tho "Morning Post," London). It is the story of two men who, when cholera broke out in the camp, averted a panic, and by their work and coolness saved the lives of many who had been stricken by the disease. | Tho men are Mi-. Foster Pegg, stated to be a Londoner, and Mr. G. E. Higgins, of Rayleigh, Essex. They wcro in charge of a large party of antive carriers and campmeu at Memawk Forest, which ia owned by Messrs. Louis T. Leonowens, Ltd., of King William street/ E.G. Fifteen men were stricken with cholera, and the Englishmen knew that at any moment panic would break out among tho workers. They immediately broke camp and sent the natives to another station at Wang Tong Doi, they themselves remaining behind with the sick men. In spite of their efforts six of the coolies died soon after camp was broken. The Englishmen buried them at night. Two more died a few days later. There were still seven victims, and things looked black. The Englishmen were able to get only occasional sleep, but they were rewarded by seeing the sufferers showing signs of improvement, and later on they were able to leave with the two Englishmen. Congratulations reached! them . from many fellow-countrymen in this wild country. Tho directors of Messrs. Louis T. Leonowens, Ltd., have presented each of them with 50 guineas and a gold cigarette case.
