UNEMPLOYMENT
A FARMER'S REMEDY
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHUBCH, This Day.
Piecework, or payment by results, as a solution of the unemployment problem was urged by Mr. C. M'lnto^h in his presidential address to tho provincial conference of the North Canterbury District Branch of the Farmers' Union. Ho said:
"The unemployment situation seems to be getting gradually worse. It must be tackled in a business way. "We appear to be starting at the wrong end. It is better to erect a fence at the top of the precipice than maintain ,an ambulance at tho bottom. In my opinion it is not the high rates of wages paid that'is the cause of unemployment, but tho low output per man for tho wages received, which makes the article manufactured too costly, thereby not finding a ready sale."
