, NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL

A meeting of the council of the New Zealand Football Association was held last evening, Mr. F. Campbell presiding.

TweJ^^-sr entries were received for the Chatham Cup competition, a? J*Uows:— Wellington 8, Wanganui 2, Auckland 4, Manawatu 1, Otago 5, Canterbury 5. Mr. J. C. Young, of Palmerston North, forwarded a cheque ,f or £5 as a donation towaida the funds of the association. A donation of £1 Is was received from Mr. A. Q. Barrett, a vice-president. Mr. D. G. Stirratt, representing the New Zealand Referees' Association, was welcomed to the meeting. The chairman said that, although Mr. Stirratt would have no vote at present, it was hoped that he would take part in the discussions.

Mr. George Cox,. of Hamilton, wrote (stating that he had resigned the secretaryship of the South Auckland Association, and that he had been succeeded by Mr. F. ilead. Mr. Cox stated that he had secured an eight-guinea-trophy for the South Island public schools tournament, together •with £2 2s for a miniature trophy for the first winners, from the trustees of the Herbert Smith fund. He had been promised a trophy for the North Island, but was negotiating in the matter, as the North Island already had a trophy. Auckland, Wellington,' and Otago Associations wrote approving of tlie proposal to revert to the original method of playing for the F.A. trophy, in which the major associations met each other andi tlie trophy is awarded on points, but Canterbury disagreed, urging that the trophy should continue to be a challenge trophy. The chairman pointed out that no change could be made unless the four major associations were unanimous. On his motion, it was decided that the trophy should be fclayed on the challenge basis this season,
