PICCADILLY FOUNTAIN

LAW ENSURES RETURN

(From "The Post's" Representative.) LONDON, 27th March. Sir David Murray, K.A., has suggested that the Shaftsbury Memorial, with the famous Eros statue, should be transplanted to Green Park, a plan that has the approval of the Royal Academy. There are others who maintain that the fountain was designed by the sculptor solely for the spot on which it stood. It was a thing of beauty in the midst of the great city's traffic. It appears, however, that all the discussion iis beside the point, as an Act of Parliament ensures that it should bo replaced in Piccadilly Circus. The Act was passed seven years ago —the London Electric Eailway Act, 1923. It authorised the company to remove the memorial temporarily to facilitate the execution of their works and provided for its re-erection in Piccadilly Circus (the company's works being completed) "to the satisfaction of the London County Council in such a position as may bo agreed upon between the London County Council and the City (of Westminster) Council, or, failing agreement, as may be determined by an arbitrator to be appointed on the application of either party by the president for tho time being of the Board of. Trade." ,

The actual position the memorial will eventually occupy in the circus has not yet been decided. Certain work is still in progress beneath the island, site, and even when this is completed a further period will elapse f.'liile traffic experiments are carried out.

The Local Government Committee arc urging expedition, and believe that the delay before Eros can return is nearly at an end.
