SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

HAVOC IN NORTHERN PERSIA

TEHERAN, 10 th May. Numerous casualties, and widespread damage are reported as tho result of earthquakes in the Aberbaijan district. The shocks were the most severe at Salmas, which was almost (entirely destroyed, the new quarter of the town suffering extensively. It is reported that 2000 were killed and 500 injured in the district. Many tremors were felt at Tabriz, culminating on Friday in a terrible earthquake lasting for a minute and a half. ■

The panic-stricken population fled and took refuge in the hills to the southward, wher,e they are camping. The town is deserted.

The Shah has given £2000 to the relief fund. ■
