ROYAL CLOTHES FOR DUKE

The death is reported of Don Alfonso cle Silva Campbell, Duke de Hijar, who was a gentleman-in-waiting and a personal friend of the King of Spain. To the heir of the deceased nobleman passes the peculiar honour of receiving each year the clothing in which the King was dressed on Epiphany Day. A quaint ceremony, celebrating historical event of the year 1462, is still enacted in the spring of each year in the streets of this city (says the Madrid correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph"). One of the fine coaches from the Eoyal stables, followed by a mount; ed courier, is dispatched from the palace, carrying spread out on the seat all the clothes worn by His Majesty on 6th January. The privilege was granted as a tribute to the heroism of one of the ancestors of the duko, who, as a page, exchanged his clothes with King Jeon at the siege of Toledo, thus saving the monarch's life. Several hundreds of suits and other garments to-day figure in a collection kept at the Ducal Palace in glass cases.
