CROQUET FUNCTION
CLOSING. OP THE SEASON
One- of the most cnjoyablo functions so far arranged by tho AVellington Croquet Association, was "that held yesterday afternoon in Messrs. Kirkcaldies. tearooms to mark, the close of the 1929----30 croquet season. More than three hundred players were present, also Mrs. Troup, Mayoress. The guests were received by Mrs. W. S. Austin (president) and Mrs. E. M'Kenzio (secretary). Dainty posies were handed to Mrs. Troup and Mrs. Austin by the secretary. Mesdames Schmidt and King sang some charming songs, being accompanied by. Mrs. Andrews and Miss Chudley.
Mr. Windsor-Richards, who' has spent the past croquet season in New Zealand, gave a very helpful talk on croquet generally, with special mention of conditions of play as he found them locally. He strongly advocated handicapping being carried out on handicap play except in very exceptional circumstances. He said he was leaving for England on Saturday, and would do all •he could towards getting another English team to visit the Dominion at an early date.
Mrs. Austin specially referred to the highly successful season just 'concluded, and called on tho Mayoress to present the following trophies won in tho interclub matches:—A grade shield, Hataitai Club (Mrs. Brighting, vice-president, receiving it); intermediate grade, Wellington Club (Mrs. Clark, president); B grade, Upper Hutt Club (Mi>. Harper, president). Break competition (trophies donated by "Peg"): Intermediate grado, Mrs. J. Eobinson; runneiMip, Mrs. Mitchell. B grade, Mrs. Harper; runner-up, Mr. Laurie; consolation, Mosdamcs Eobortson and Pcppei\ Champion of champions: A grade, Mrs. Johnson; runner-up, Mrs. Bock. Intermediate grade, Mrs. J. Bobinson; run-nor-up, Mrs. Heymanson. B grade, Mrs. Breeze; runner-up, Mrs. J. Smith. The winners and holders oi! Pollock Stars (Mesdames O'Donncll and Gardner), Association Ferns (Mesdames Ramsay and Mitchell), and M'Kenzio Cups (Mesdames Miller and Veitch) also received musical honours.
, The presentation of a handsome crocodile bag was made to Mrs. Austin as a small appreciation of her great interest in the association. Mrs. A. Scott, who made the presentation on behalf of the players, said how grateful they all were for the help and counsel always so freely given by their ' president. After further musical honours, and "Auld Lang Sync" (accompanied by Mrs; Malcolm Eraser), the proceedings concluded with the National Anthem. N*OTES. In the published list of prize-winners of the Karori Club for the past season the name of Mrs. H. Dryden was omitted, Mrs. Dryden being runner-up in the B championship of the club. The Waimario Club, Lower Hutt, held a very successful bridge and progressive cuchro afternoon recently, when tho clubroom was fully taxed. The winners for bridge were Mesdames Salt and Foster, for euchre Mesdames M'Gill and Walker, and for sealed number Mrs. H. Judd. The proceeds arc to be used to provide lockers in the,, pavilion.
