FIVE TO ONE AGAINST

AUSTRALIA'S TRADE WITH AMERICA

(Received 9th May, 10 a.m.)

WASHINGTON, Sth May

Mr. James E. Fcnton, Minister for Customs, Australia, is in Washington. He called upon the Assistant Secretary for Commerce, Dr. Julius Klein, and discussed with him the trade balance between the United States and Australia. Di> Klein emphasised the fact that while the United States balance was approximately five to one aaginst Australia, yet the balance with Far Eastern countries was against the United States. On the whole, the balance veally favours Australia. "There,is a tendency in Australia," added Dr. Klein, "to ascribe it to the tariff; but to me it seems rather due to the fact that Australia and the United States produce much the same raw materials." Dr. Klein also discussed the operation of American plants in Australia. "The tendency," he said, "is to gradually even up exports and imports. When discussing the trade balance between' Australia and the United States, attention lrtust not be focused on the trade of those countries alone."
