SPECTACULAR BLAZE

an old Landmark;

FLOURMILL OF.EARLY DAYS

(By Telegraph.—Prew Atioclation.)

TE AWAM.UTU, This Day.

■Aii old wooden: building, erected fifty years ago, and formerly.a flour,mill in the early days of the ; Waikato, was completely destroyed by fire last night. The building.was located on the Main South road adjacent to the borough. It was well alight when the fiiv was discovered. The flames spread rapidly, making a most spectacular blaze-. ;. The brigade was successful in checking any spread of the fire- to neighbouring buildings. '

Tho place was originally of three stories, but the top one was dismantled a -couplo of years ago owing to age. It was owned by Mr. Claude Sargent, of Tauranga, and -was latterly used as a grain store. At tho tinie of the fire it was unoccupied. Tho cause of the outbreak is a mystery. There are no insurances. !;

An old car, a shed in which it stood, and a washhouso, all situated at the back of Mr. F. Haig's house in Nai Nai lane, Lower Hutt, wero totally destroyed by fire, which broke out in the washhouse at about 10- a.m. to-day. Nothing was insured.

A brilliant blaze from the chimney of a blast furnace at Lowe's foundry, Main street, Lower Hutt, last evening was mistaken by somebody for the sign of trouble, and the fire-alarm was sounded. It was just after dinner, and a crowd quickly gathered. The furnace is frequently in use, and flames from the chimney at night are a common sight. . '. . . . . .
