FALSE PRETENCES CHARGE

AUCKLAND, This Day.
In the Police Court, Thomas Georgs Wise, aged 28, a- collector, was re« manded fQr sentence on. a charge of ob< taining money by false pretences.
It was stated by the police, that the accused went into business as the "New Zealand Trust Executors 1Agency, Mortgage, Finance, and General Investment Association," with a capital of £5. Ho collected fees for the valuations of property submitted as securities, then stalled off inquiries, finally telling them that their securities were not good enough. _ ■ The accused, in evidence, said that he had handled about 500 applications for loans, and that about one-third had been successful. He believed that his valuations were genuine. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., said there were ten instances where he was not disposed to accept the good faith of the accused. He would discuss the case with the Probation Officer, and taka into consideration the fact that the aceuscd refunded the money in several instances^" ■
