(Received Ist Marci^B.4s p.m.)" ' ROME, 28th February. Ihe death is announced of Cardinal Merry Del Val.
The late Cardinal was born in London in 1565, where his father was secretary to tho Spanish Legation. lie was educated in England and Ireland, and ordained priest in ISBS, beginning early in his career to specialise in diplomatic work for the Vatican. In 1892 he became Master of tho Robes and acting private Chamberlain to Popo Leo XIII., with whom he was a great favourite. In 1897 he ■ was sent to Canada to report on tho difficult Manitoba Schools question, and accomplished this mission with conspicuous success. In 1900 he became Archbishop of Nieoa. He was secretary of tho Sacred College of Cardinals during the election' of Pius X. in 1903, under whom he became Cardinal and Secretary of State. In 1913 he succeeded Cardinal Eanpolla as Archpriest of the Basilica, of St. Peter's, Rome, and in the following year was appointed Secretary of the Supreme Congregation of the Holy Office by Benedict XV. In 1920 he became Camar lingo of th<; Holy Roman Chnrch.
