ISLAND BAY BAND ROTUNDA

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—ln Thursday's issue of "The Post" appeared a photograph of the new memorial band' rotunda at Island Bay. Musiclovers will welcome this structure, always providing it is put to better use than such buildings usually are: for the average brass band programme is, unfortunately, framed to please tho lower strata of ■• intelligence.

But, Sir, it seems to me that the inscription on this rotunda is hardly in keeping with the solemnity of association: it is neither dignified nor grammatical. New Zealand has tile name of leading the world in educational reform; therefore, the wording of any memorial intended to be permanent should at least conform to the laws of standard English. Should anyone contend that this objection savours of hair-splitting, ray reply is that it is purely better to split hairs than to split infinitives. —I am, etc.,

L. D. AUSTIN.
