CANCER CAMPAIGN
WIDE INTEREST AROUSED
Although, a wonderful advance has been made in medical science during the last half-century in the discovery of the causes of diseases and in their cure, as well as in the prevention of the spread of many infectious diseases which took a great toll of human life in past generations, there are still some diseases the prevention and cure of which have so far baffled all efforts to combat them. Amongst these is cancer, but even in the case of this malady, which is responsible for much suffering and death, it has been made abundantly clear that if attended to in tho early stages its cure is practically certain; the trouble is that patients are often unawaro of the nature of the trouble at an early stage, and postpone tho taking of advice until too late. ,'■...- -
Attention is drawn in an advertisement to the first annual meeting of the Now Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign, which will be held in the British Medical Association rooms, Wellington terrace, on Tuesday, the 25th instant, at 8 p.m. His Majesty the King is patron of the campaign, and the president ia the Duke of York.
. Interest in the campaign was stimulated by the visit last year of Mr. Sampson Handley, the well-known London surgeon and authority on cancer. The New Zealand branch was formed at that time; the appeal for funds has met with a generousrespo vnse, and t*-is has enabled the New Zealand branch to engage a recognised.research authority in England. (Dr. A.. M. Begg) to come to Nevy Zealand and continue his investigations here, and confer with the medical profession in New Zealand as to the treatment of the disease. Dr. Begg is ..t present visiting the cancer research institutes of Paris, Brussels, and Stockholm, in order to study tho latest discoveries and methods of treatment in Continental laboratories.
The members of the medical profession have shown intense interest in the campaign, and proof of this has been seen in the cordial support they have given to it, and in the establishment of cancer clinics at the principal hospitals. :
