EX-ARCHDEACON WAKEFGSD
NOTORIOUS CASE RECALLED
LONDON,' 13th February.
The death has occurred of the former Archdeacon Wakeford, who was the central figure in much litigation since he was deprived of his church offices on the ground of immorality. Ho died insane. . ' i The late Archdeacon John Wakeford, Canon and Pi;ecentor of Lincoln Cathedral, Archdeacon of Stow, and vicar of Kirkstead, was convicted at the Lincoln Consistory Court in 1921 on a series of charges of adultery with an unknown woman at tho Bull Hotel, Peterborough, on Sunday and Monday, 14th and 15t,h March, and Good Friday, 2nd April, 1920, or, alternatively, that lie occupied a bedroom at tho hotel on tlioso dates with a woman who was not his wife. The Archdeacon admitted that ho stayed at tho hotel on tho dates mentioned, but he denied that he was accompanied by a woman. The case aroused enoi-mous interest in England at tho time,, and Archdeacon Wakeford subsequently unsuccessfully appealed to tho Judicial Committee of tho Privy Council. The hearing of the appeal lasted seven days, and the Archdeacon's case was presented by four loading ( counsel.
