Died Of Starvation

The death from chronic starvation in a Budapest nursing home of the Hungarian author Eugene Tomory has revealed a tragedy that until the last waa unsuspected- even by his friends, says the "Daily Mail." \

It, was known that Tomory, who had been a member of the National Assembly from" 1920 to 1922, was in straitened circumstances, but only his death has revealed the true position.

Though renowned for great beauty of style, the philosophic character of his works accounts for their failure to achieve popular appeal.

•As a former. official of the National Health Insurance Department, he received 30s a month, while his income from other sources could hardly have supplemented this by much.

Latterly he had taken to eating practically nothing at all for-days on end so that his two children, aged 6 and 7, might have sufficient food to maintain life. Yet he bore his Bufferings with such fortitude ihat nobody who associated with Mm in the final weeks of Ms life suspected the true cause of his obvious decline.

When taken to a nursing home, his weak and emaciated state, due to prolonged fasting, made him unable to withstand the- operation undertaken in the hope of relieving a serious intestinal complaint brought about by his privations.

Eugene Toniory was buried in a grave of honour at the expense of the municipality of Budapest, a mark of distinctira. which is reserved for Hungary's greatest sons. , » '
