M'GIRR AND BADCOCK

DUNEDIN, 31st January

In dull and showery weather the Plunket Shield game between Otago and Wellington was commenced oa Carisbrook ground to-day. Light rain, fell during the greater part of the da/ with a .heavy fall in the afternoon^ which caused an adjournment of an hour and a-half.

Alloo lost the toss and Lowry, the Wellington skipper, elected to bat. The wicket was easy, and conditions of play fairly good all day. M'Girr played a fine innings for 73, but he should have been disposed of when he, was

The best display of the day was that of Badcock, who compiled 62 in 72 minutes. He scored equally well on the leg and off, and his timing was perfect. When stumps were drawn the visitors had lost nine wickets for 283 runs. The best bowler of the day was Lemin, who proved a tower of strength to the home side, taking four wickets for 61.

M'Girr joined Cameron after lunch, and opened his account with a single. He got Lemin away for a couple, and drove him for four, bringing 110 pp. Ho'Vrcached double figures by driving Elmos to the fence, and pulled one rouiid for another four before the over finished. M'Girr was 62 when he pulled a ball hard round to square leg, where Groves missed a hard catch. Both batsmen, were now giving a good display of steady cricket, but M'Girr's fine innings cams to an end when Badcock played a ball from Alloo to M'Millan. Newman joined Bacicock, who had scored 28. The latter drove Elmes for four, and passed 30, bringing 240 up. He reached his half-century after 65 minutes' batting by pulling Elmes to the fence, but he was not destined to go much farther.
