HOME OF COMPASSION
STREET DAY APPEAL TO-MORROW
The City Council has granted the Home of Compassion permission to make a street appeal to-morrow, and a strong committee of ladies and gentlemen under the chairmanship of Mr. F. J. Oakes is at present busily engaged in making the necessary arrangements. The Sisters of Compassion rely exclusively on the generosity of the public to carry on their philanthropic work. They have no fixed annual income or endowments to draw from. In the year 1884 the late Eev. Mother. Aubert, the memory of whom all Ntrw Zealand honours, founded the Institute of Our Lady of Compassion at Hiruhirania, on the Wanguuui River, for tho relief of all sufferers, especially ths most neglected. In 1900 Mother Aubert established a Home for Incurables in Buckle street, Wellington, and in 1907 tho Home of Compassion, Island Bay, was erected. This institution cares for over a hundred children, crippled, distorted, and neglected—from infants in arms to children of achool agegives them all of the advantage* of the most approved methods in a commodious and fully equipped building, and keeps them happy, content, and secure without invested capital and without endowment, with a minimum effort and a maxim of Christian charity. Another work is that afforded by the Creche, wherein working mother* may confidently leave their children for the day. All these works were erected and maintained on the proceeds of the safe investment of, half-a-crown— which represented the capital which the late Rev. Mother Aubert had when she commenced her work in Wellington—and a profound trust in Divine Providence and the inspired charity of the people of all denominations of the city, To-day her successors are building additions to the Home at Island Bay—involving an expenditure of £25,000—t0 meet the demands made upon them in connection with their work amongst the neglected and suffering no matter their race, colour, or creed. One of the activitier which the late Mother Aubort had in miud for years, but could only, accomplish prior to her death, was a properly equipped hospital. This necessdt-y adjunct in connection with the work of the Sisters is now in full working order. The public of Wellington will have an opportunity of showing their appreciation of the work of the Sisters of Compassion to-morrow in the public street day appeal which will be made.
