AMATEUR ATHLETICS

TO-NIGHT'S CARNIVAL.

Owing to the Basin Reserve being declared unfit for athletic events last night, the monster sports carnival had to be postponed until this evening, When a full programing of events .will be staged. Chief interest is now being centred round the 1000 yrtrds special nice, ill which H. E. Newton,, of Wangahui, will attempt the New Zealand record. The other Blatters will be .Ogg, Campbell, and Wilson (Olympic), Pickering (Wellington), and 11. Leech (University). This event alone will be well worth watching. In the oncmilo grand handicap Tutty, M'Carthy, and Stevens, three very fine distance runners, are among the starters, and ate sure to provide an exciting finish. Tho novelty event in which a whippet will race a cyclist and a runner _ should be very interesting, and will gitfe an idea of the speeds of these throe. Miss Kench, the lady sprinter, will bo fully extended by Miss Murray, Miss Wilson, and Miss Millar in the handicap events for ladies, whilst an attempt will be made to defeat the Wellington Club's championship ladies' relay team. F. Brady, the noted high jumper, will be seen in action, and if the conditions are favourable, will attempt a leap of six feet. The form of E. K. Eastwood, C. B. Allan, and R. Leech, ttn'Se of the fastest University athletes in New Zealand, will be interesting, as this is practically their first appearance this season. The first event, of a leflgthy programme is to start «t 8 p.m. sharp.
