DAIRY BOARD
STRONG CRITICISM
DRASTIC CHANGES URGED
(Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Some hard things were said about the Dairy Produce Control Board at yesterday's meeting of the executive of the Dairy Farmers' Union. Mr. W. 11. Gimblett compared the board with a ship without a rudder. It was aimless in its workings, had no policy, and was a parasite on the industry. He moved that the number of members should be reduced, and the salaries cut down by half. Mr. Small: "The board should be abolished for three years." I Mr. Gimblett: "The board is an imposition on -the industry and rendering very little service." Mr. . Mason thought the board should be reduced to producers' representatives only. Other members of the executive agreed with the opinions already advanced. Mr. Small thought there might be a need for the board as constituted, but salaries could be cut down. He thought that if the board had control of the industry to-day there would be better prices than the farmers were now getting. Mr. Campbell: "Provided the industry did not get into the hands of extremists." Mr.. Small: "The full representation should be there, but the levy on the industry is too. heavy for the services rendered." The chairman also thought the board should be kept going. As regards the levy, it should not be forgotten that a great deal of that money had been spent on advertising. However, he thought the board should be reduced to producers' representatives only. Why should the farm- . ers have to pay the salaries of the repre- : sentatives of the Government and private interests? It was finally decided to advocate that [ the board be composed of producers' re- ! presentatives only, and that the salaries ' of members be considerably reduced.
