CLUB'S CYCLE MEETING

WARNJNG TO AMATEURS

"ATHLETIC CENTRE IGNORED"

A special meeting"bf the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Council was held to-day to consider what action should be taken in view of the fact that the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club is advertising a cycling meeting in Auckland for 30th December, and announces it to be run under the auspices of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists. In'the interests of amateur riders; particularly in centres outside Auckland, the council'decided to issue a statement warning them ;of: the possible serious consequences that may- result if they compete'at the gathering. The statement is as follow:—"It has come to our notice that the Manukau Amateur Cycling Club is advertising a meeting for 30th December under the auspices of ; a body styled 'The New Zealand Union of Cyclists.' Wo understand further that invitations have been received by registered amateur riders m other parts of New Zealand to compete at this meeting. The programme includes professional as well as : amateur races. No permit has been .issued by the N.Z.A.A.A. or its Auckland Centre to hold this meeting and. this association wishes to warn riders that taking part in this meeting will render them liable to disqualification. It should be pointed out that the New Zealand Union of Cyclists appar^ ently .consists of one club only bar the Manukau. Cycling Club, and is jnot re-cognised-by the N.Z.A.A.A; as having any authority in the control of amateur cycling, in New. Zealand.

"We who control amateur cycling can only look upon this meting as a deliberate attempt to flout the authority of the N.Z.A.A.A., and this warning is issued in the interests of riders who, by competing, will deprive themselves of the .right to take part in any N.Z.A.A.A.: club or championship contests." .-,: ..-■••

Mr. H. Austad, who presided, said that tho council had deemed it advisable to make certain that no application had been made to the Auckland Centre, N.Z.A.A.A., for a permit to hold the" meeting, and a telegram had been received as follows:—"Manukau ignore centre; claim affiliation New Zealand Union of Cyclists."

"This is a domestic trouble, apparently," added Mr. Austad, "and we wish it to. stay in Auckland. We wisij riders to recognise the position, however, and not take any steps, perhaps quite innocently, whien might result in serious consequences later."

At the suggestion of Mr. E. G. Guy it was also decided to write to the Manukau Club pointing out that it was still affiliated with the N.Z.A.A.A., and asking for an explanation as to why the meeting was advertised as it has been. ■. . .
