VOTING STRENGTH SHRINKS
A feature of the polling yesterday was the shrinkage in the number of votes received by the United and Labour Parties as compared with those east for those partias at the General Election last year. At the General Election, the United Party candidate (Mr. Wilford) received a total of 7283 votes (including absentee and postal votes), and Mr. Nash, his Labour opponent, 5978. On the preliminary count, the United vote at the by-elec-tion yesterday has dropped by 2646 and the Labour vote by 1185. As the Eeform Party did not' contest the seat at the General Election it is to be assumed that a large proportion of Mr. Wilford's votes at that time came from Eeform supporters who did not wish to risk Labour capturing the seat. Tiie Reform vote yesterday was 2368.
