QUEEN MARGARET COLLEGE

The annual prize-giving of Queen Margaret College was held last night in the Central Hall of the school in Hobson street. Mr. J. T. Martin, chairman of the board, presided, and was supported by the principal (Miss Wilson), the Mayor (Mr. G. A. Troup), and Mrs. Troup, the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, Rev. A. E. Todd, and Mr. Watt.

Mr. Martin called attention to the school magazine, which, he said, was the best production the school had had. He referred also to the growth'of the school. This year there were 148 scholars, and the school was as full as it could be. He attributed the school's success to the principal (Miss Wilson), who had all those qualities necessary for a successful administrator. In her report, she had stated several needs for the school, one being a separate board for Queen Margaret's. He quite approved of this, and hoped when- the time came parents would be prepared to act. Again, Miss Wilson had asked for several additions, new classrooms, tennis courts, and more room for boarders. All these requirements would cost at least £2000, and the board had not got the money. He again hoped those interested would come forward and help. He thanked Miss Wilson and her staff, teachers, and house staff for then: work during the year.

Hiss Wilson referred to the increase in the school. She did not want a large school, but already there was a waiting list. No more boarders could be taken unfil accommodation was provided. They had overcome their early difficulties, and now she felt if they were to keep their place in the esteem of the public they must give those advantages which were looked for in modern education. She made no apology for the scholastic or cultural side, but facilities were wanted to give that training in sport and in handcraft that, was required to allow girls to develop more diverse gifts. She wanted a •well-equipped cookery room, art room, etc., She stressed that not scholastic achievement, but the right attitude of mind to future work was what was aimed at, and she hoped that the school had been able to give the girls that. Miss Wilson also reported on the cooperation of the house captains and prefects, and especially mentioned Miriam Spiers as head of the house, and Katherine Hoby as head of the school. After Mrs. Troup had distributed the prizes, Mr. Troup addressed the gathering, congratulating the school on its advance, ft was pleasing, he said, to see the parents taking an interest in the school, and he hoped that when Mr. Martin asked for the £2000 it would be forthcoming. The school choir gave several carols, ana afterwards the visitors were entertaine-1 to supper, while samples of the pupils vrork were on view in the classrooms.
