j The nomination of Mr. James Kerr, of Peton^, as the official United Party candidato for the Hutt seat was only expressing regret at the illness of Sir Lower Hutt, Waiwetu, Petono, Moera, Koro Koro, Day's Bay, and Eastbourne electors last night. Tho Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr. H. M. Jones) presided, and amongst those present were the sitting member (the Hon. T. M. Wilford), and the chairman of the United Party organisation (Mr. A. Davy). Mr. Kerr acceded to the request of the meeting that he should accept nomination in the interests of the United Party, and his candidature was endorsed in a telegram from the loader of the party (tho Eight Hon. Sir Joseph Ward). "I feel sure you will put up a good fight, and that you will come through the contest with flying colours," said Sir Joseph. A strong campaign committee was set up, with Mr. Frank Campbell (Lower Hutt) as chairman and Mr. H. A. Ryder (Petone),as deputy chairman. A resolution was passed unanimously expressing regret at the illness of Sir Joseph' Ward and wishes for a speedy recovery to health *o that he may continue to lead the United Party. Tributes were also paid to the splendid work performed by the Hon. T. M. Wilford as representative of the district for the past thirty years, and he was warmly congratulated on the high honour conferred on him by his appointment as High Commissioner in London. Residents of the Hutt electorate, who havo resided there for over three mouths, and are "not. enrolled, are re- [ minded that they must enrol immediately if they are to exercise their vote at the approaching by-election.
