STORM IN DUNEDIN

MINOR DAMAGE REPORTED

DUNEPIN, This Day.

A gale which sprang up at about 8 o'clock yesterday morning was responsible for a certain amount of minor dam. age. in and around the city. jit Musselburgh Bise, neitr tho corner of Eoyal eresent and Anderson's Bay road, a fence and a tall fir tree wore blown down. In its fall the tree crash' ed into a garage owned by Miss Cargill, causing considerable damage to the garage and minor damage to the ear inßide. • At High Street. School the gale tore off a number -of slates from the roof and sent them hurtling into tho play* ground. Fortunately all the children were inside the school at the time, and the headmaster kept them there till shortly after noon, when during a quiet spell he sent them all home for the day. Falling branches in tho property of Mr- A. S. Paterson which overhang the- street broke some of tho electric power lines, and tho sijfth standard boys were put on to do guard <\uty until all tho younger pupils were clear of the danger zone. Five olectric light poles wore reported to be down, one each at Anderson's Bay, Ravcnsbourne,- AHanton, Mosgiel, and Musselburgh Rise. A pole at the corner of Manor place and Bond street waß broken. In the city itself little damage was done, but a heavy piece of iron was dislodged from a verandah outside the friendly societies' dispensary in Moray place. Shortly after 3 o'clock there was a heavy shower of rain p.nd a little snow in the city. The hills received a fairly heavy coating well "down. A 60 feet flagpole at the property of Mrs. -J. M'Georgo in Eglintou ro&d was blown down, breaking telegraph wires, and at St. Helens Ilospital a large signboard was carried away. Tho fierce wind blowing down harbour prevented the discharging of phosphates from, the steamer Lawbeath at Pqrt Chalmers. It also blew" several yachts from their moorings, the Ripple sufforing considerably through contact with a training wall.
