YACHTING

Br 'Mainsail" A FREE HAND

SANDERS CUP.SELECTORS

TRIALS EARLY NEXT.'M€£NTH

It is gratifying to note that the "Wellington Provincial Yacnt ana Motorboat Association has Geeidecl to give the three Sanders Cup selectors (Messrs. J. Moffatt, J. M'Donald, and A. "G. Harvey) a free hand in the conduct of the trials. Had this course been followed .in a recent series of Cup trials, much unpleasantness, which surely did no good, at all to the cause of yachting on Port Nicholson, would have beeD avoided. Another point which somewhat bewilders the writer is the facility with., which the association chops and changes each season, between the advocacy1 of one selector and three. This season, it is understood, the three selectors have guaranteed to be in attandance at every; trial. If this proves to be the case, and the selectors in question are gentlemen -Those interest in the sport over a long period speaks for itself, tho forthcoming trials should be disposed _ of in good time and without any quite unnecessary bickering such as has characterised previous Cup preliminaries. Heretaunga's-New Course. A new course has been adopted by the Heretaunga Boating Club for all races. Starting from the wharf, the boats will sail to a mark off Somes Island, up to another off Patrick street, and along to the clubhouse, twice round, Saturday's races were held in an ideal full-sail southerly. The Takapnna race " resulted as follows: Buna (scr), finishing time, 4h.2lmin 50sec, 1; Shirley (scr), 4h 25min, 2; Wairuna (scr), 4h. 31min 40see, 3; Waitui (lmin), 4i 35min 4; Nukumai (scr), 4h 44min, 5. The new Buna was first round1 the gomes Island buoy, and she led all the rest of the way, winning comfortably. In, the event for 14-footers, the Onyx won. by more than her handicap. Being a heavy weather boat, she improved as the wind gained in strength. The competitors were escorted by Mr. E. Parr's launch Aloha. This has the advantage of giving the skippers confidence in. taking chances in heavy weather, since they know that if capsizes do occur they will not be long in the water, and their boats will be taken in charge without delay. The detailed results of the race are. as follows: Onyx (6min), finishing time, 4h 27min, 1-' Mahau (scr), 4h 54min, 2; Ola (3mm), 5h 4min, 3. The Valkyrie (smin), also started, but lost a stay and retired. Evans Bay Notes. Last week-end was a quiet one at Evans Bay. On Saturday afternoon the opening of the Eoyal Port Nicholson, Yacht Club took most of the members away^and Sunday was cold and Bqually. and did not induce much-sailing. There was a very good attendance of members at the opening of- the parent club, and various'craft went round from the Bay. The Marangi, with, the crew in black and gold uniforms, looked very smart, and a notable feature was the" sailing, considering the weather of the small boat Cappy Kicks by two young" members of the club. It is probable that a fair number of the centre-boarders stationed, in the Bay will be racing for both clubs this season. The chief difficulty from the Bay point of view will, be getting across to the Boat Harbour in .time, but -that will probably be overcome.V V Worser Bay Club. : No race was held last Saturday owing ' to the E:PJST.Y.C. opening, which was attended by many Worser Bay members. It was not a-very good day for the opening, but the band livened up the proceedings towards- the end. A number of the boats were gaily decked with flags which were twisted everywhere at once by the tricky southerly. The Puhi was the only Worser Bayboat in attendance. She made- good time round with a fresh breeze behind her, arriving in time to allow her crew to .witness the greasy-pole event, which, provided_a good deal of amusement. On: Sunday the bleak southerly kept all, the boats in the sheds. Paremata Club Opening. Members of all kindred clubs are reminded that the Paremata Club opens * its 1929-30 season to-morrow, and that the clubhouse will be thrown open to visitors all day. An invitation general handicap race will be: held in the morning, in which both first and second-class centre-boarders will take part, and at least a dozen boats are expected to face the starter. The season will be official-; ly declared open by the patron of the club, Mr. Fred Bradey, at 3 p.m., following which it is hoped to stage/ two races for the' speedy outboard craft;. Should the weather prove propitious, a thoroughly enjoyable day is assured, and a hearty invitation to attend is extended to • all fellow-yachtsmen and. their friends. R.P.N.Y.C. Doirgs. Now that the ..season has been officially opened, many, yachts should be seen, out in the harbour. Yachting seems to have made a "come-back* during the last year, and the. prospects for this season are decidedly bright. The Sanders' Cup trials are due to take place early in December, and the club will be entering the two Wellesleys and the Clyde. There is much talk of another "one-designer" coming to Wellington, but so far "Mainsail" has not heard anything definite. Strenuous endeavours were made to get the Kona off the slip last Sunday, but she needed another, foot of water. She will be brought round to the Boat Harbour this week-end, and the crew will be hard put to get her rigged in. time for nest Saturday's race; The Seabird came off the slip on Sunday, and her crew have decided to give the " green" copper paint a trial. The Marangi, lolanthe, and Ramp ' made, quite a pleasant sight when they came round from the Bay to the club's opening last Saturday. Ojrihg to the strong southerly the boats all had some t reefs in. The Clyde was out for a short sail during the afternoon.- ' - The Viola and Linnet are to go up on the slip this week for a clean in readiness for next Saturday's. race. Work has been started in earnest on the Windward, and she will probably b» ready to take part in the second race otn the club's programme. l»ort Nicholson Motor-boat Cluti. The club's season opens on 24th November, with a ladies' picnic to which all old members and friends. are cordially invited. Commodore C. Kiernan's Manutai is £$ick and span in a ne./ coat of paint and is all res.-ry for tb> opening of the sieai_ii. •' The Kereru, owned by Mr. \V. Cable president of the club, is due on to* slio for annual overhaul this veaf Quinnell hopes to anAex tbo ch-mpionship, also the Kirkoildia ' Cup. Vice-Commodoro Fred Hendry has the Atalanta on the slip, and she is expected to be half a knot faster with. I:he paint and baraeles burnt off her
