TETSCHEN'S "HUNGER STONES"
The Hunger Stones appeared ajjiiin l-his year in tho llivcr !Ulbe at Ti:tschen. Only in very dry seasons do the M-aters shrink till these ominous stones •ippear above tho water - level. Otliei generations have cut, dates on them, so that men can read of the droughts oi tlio past and remember the troubles of other days. The custom is centuries old; n0w'"1929" will be cut on one of tho Hunger Stones. Once a great chough! meant many deaths ;unong men and beasts, and although that cannot hap- \ pen to-day there will bo want, poverty, and perhaps ruin because of the drought. Old men shako tlieh- heads when they see the Hunger Stones drying in the sun.
