METHODIST SYNOD
The Wellington District Methodist Synod continued its annual meeting yesterday afternoon and to-day.
It was resolved that the name of Kilbirnie Circuit-bo changed to Wellington East Circuit.
The synod agreed that a probationer be 'appointed as second minister to the Johnsonville-Ngaio Circuit to* reside at Ngaio, with a suitable grant. A resolution acknowledging "the goodness of God in the measure of success that has attended our labours during the year, particularly in the increases recorded in adult, junior, and infant membership, and in ,the devoted services of the officers, local preachers, and ladies' guilds," was carried.
An animated discussion took place on the subject of military training, and after several speakers had expressed their views, the following resolutions were carried: (1) 'We recommend that our NeHv Zealand Methodist Church work for, and urge tha Government to repeal part 6 of the Defence Act, 1909, which provides for the universal obligation to be trained in times of peace; (2) That our New Zealand Church work for, and urge the Government to recognise the right of the individual conscience to determine a person's attitude to military service. Iv this regard it is understood that the applicant will submit reasonable proofs of his bona fides.
An amendment to urge the substitution of physical training for military training was defeated.
_ The synod resolved that a men's missionary organisation be formed and a Bonimittee was set up to consider during the. year methods of work to be adopted- and others matters pertaining to such a movement.
