MR. JOHN MANNING

His many friends and others with whom he came into contact officially will regret to' learn that Mr. John Frederic, Manning, Chief Bailiff and Maintenance Officer at the Wellington Magistrate's Court, died yesterday at his residence, 50, Waitoa road, Hataitai, after a long illness. Mr. Manning, after a period of leave of absence, returned to his duties, • but a few weeks ago he had'to cease work again.l

Born on Bth November, 1867, the late Mr. Manning ..ivas appointed bailiff at Palmerston North, on Ist June, 1892, and he held that position until Ist March, 1920, when he- was« appointed <:hief bailiff 'at Wellington consequent upon the appointment of Mr. Alabaster to. the position of Court crier and custodian.; of. .the Wellington Supreme Court. .On Ist March, 1924, Mr. Manning also, took over the duties of Maintenance Officer, in which capacity, in attending to the enforcement of maintenance orders made in Wellington and others received from other parts of the British Empire, he Tiecame widely known. During his career Mr.' Manning served' under a, number of Magistrates, including Mr. A. D. Thomson, formerly Assistant Public Service Commissioner, and also Mr. W. G. Eiddell, Tvho retired from the position of principal Magistrate at Wellington at the end of last year.

The deceased was conscientious in his •attention, to duty,1 and had many fine qualities. "He had a genial disposition, and I think he was the enemy of no_ one," said one who knew him well this morning. "I should also say that he had a grudge against no one." In his younger days Mr. Maiming was a prominent footballer. Ho was a keen sports enthusiast, and took a particular interest in football.

The late Mr. Manning is survived by liis mother, Mrs. A. E. Manning, of Wellington, and his widow, and also five brothers and a sister—Messrs. C. and H. A. Manning, of Napier, Messrs. i\ E. F., .and S. J. Manning, of Wellington, and Mrs. E. S. Remington. The late Mr. Bert Manning, prominent in hockey circles in the Dominion a few years ago, was also a brother. v
