"UNFORTUNATE HITCH"

SALE OF COUNCIL PROPERTY

"There has been rather an unfortunate hitch in connection with this matter,'' said Mr. T. Forsyth at yester-" day 's meeting of the .Education Board, ■when referring to the sale of the board's property to the City Council. The Minister of Education (the Hon. H. Atmore), owing, no doubt to misapprehension, said Mr. Forsyth, had thought he saw a "nigger in the wood pile" in the ■ terms suggested by Mr. G. A. ■ Troup, the Mayor, and would not putthrough the validating clause, so that the matter was hung up. It was of great importance for the Technical College Board and also the Education Board. The children in the Wakefleld street building were cooped up all day long, as they were not now even allowed to play in the motor yard, and could, not go out for lunch. If any of them, happened to break down all they could do was to go out ; into the street. Any delay was entirely the fault of the Minister of Education. The meeting decided to represent to the Department that in order to end the present highly ■ unsatisfactory accommodation conditions of the Technical College in. Wakefield street, a sufficient advance should be made to the managers of the Technical College to enable work oa the new wings to proceed, on the understanding that as soon as arrangements could bo made it would be recouped from a part of the moneys realised from the board property. The board considers it of great importance that the clause conferring on the Corporation authority to provide the money" necessary for the purchase should have been passed in. the recent session. It was of the utmost importance that the Technical College should be in a posi--.-tion to proceed with the completion of the home science and art wings, and the substantial payment which the corporation offered would have permitted this.
