An ideal theory of the future of street lighting was propounded by the secretary of the Illuminating Engineering Society, in an address to the British Association of Public Lighting Engineers. Referring to tho growth of tho private illumination of business premises by "canopies," flood lighting, and illuminated signs, he said: "It is difficult to set a limit to the possibilities of these three applications of lighting. One can conceive in the future streets lined by luminous light-surfaced buildings where the intrusion of lampposts would seem an absurdity."
