DAY OF RECORDS

INTER-SCHOOL SPORTS - THE M'EVEDY SHIELD tfOYS' COLLEGE AGAIN Threatening weather, with a heavyshower that temporarily interrupted the morning's programme, could not prevent the annual sports for 1929, held by the Wellington Secondary Schools Athletic Association, on the Basin Reserve yesterday, proving an outstanding success from every point of view. The rain held off during the afternoon, and, apart from a gusty northerly which interfered with some of the events, the conditions left little to be desired. When the track had dried from the morning's rain it was iv irst-class condition. In the majority of the events the finalists were decided during the morning, the result being that some splendid fare was provided for the spectators who attended in good numbers later in the day. J Among those present in the afternoon were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs. G. A. Troup) and Dr. P F M'Evedy, donor of the M'Evedy Shield, who was accompanied by Mrs. M'Evedy.

NEW RECORDS ESTABLISHED,

It was a day of records. One after another the old times were improved, in some cases by .substantial margins. Nor were the record-breakers always outstanding .performers, as it frequently happened that recordß were established in very close finishes. Reference was made in "The lost yesterday to the way the records suttered during the morning, and the run ot successes continued during, the afternoon. '

The wind, which was of some strength when the events were decided, made itself ielfc m the finals of the 100 yards intermediate and senior.. The Stepheuson brothers added to their successes, but their times were l-ssec more in eauh case, than what they did in the morning. Their tunes for the furlong were also longer but the younger boy's iierformance was btill better than the standing record. The quarter-mile •.■intermediate provided a- success for J. M. Watt (WelKngton College), who,, although uot pressed, judged the distance well to improve the record of 55 3-osec that Jias.stood to the name of R Jiaslem, of Wairarapa, since 1925. A. A MODEL MEETING,

As a sports gathering a standard was set which scmor athletes might well strive to attain. THE SHIELD COMPETITION

The competition for the M'Evedy Shield decided on the aggregate of points hi the nnals, forms one of the features of the competition. Wellington College, mainly by virtue of a.superiority in the sprints, came out on top by a big margin, gaining double the points which fell to thei? nearest . competitor. In contributing the points the Stephenson brothers played a big part, as they did last year, but several others provided their quota.
