EARTHQUAKE COMMITTEE

A meeting of the Central Earthquake Committee was held this morning at Parliament House, the Minister-in-charge of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Eesearch (the Hon. H. Atmore) presiding in the absence of the Prime Minister.

It was subsequently announced by Mr. Atmore that the business was chiefly of a routine nature. Numerous accounts were passed for payment, and reports were received from sub-commit-tees and dealt with. It was arranged that ( 'the Treasury representative, Mr. Mitchell, should shortly visit the districts affected by the earthquake. Arrangements are to be made for the allocation of annuities to some of the settlers who have, been seriously affected by the disaster.
