THE SUBMARINE
MOVE FOR ABOLITION
-FRANCE'S LATEST SPECIMEN
LONDON, 10th November. Two matters of special interest will come before the Naval Conference.
First there is a report from Eome that Italy is supporting Britain and America in the abolition of the submarine. In the second place, details of France's giant submarine Surcouf, which is being launched on 18th November, and which is thousands of tons larger than Britain's largest one, have been published. The Surcouf can discharge fourteen torpedoes simultaneously. She is armed with four five-inch guns and she also carries small seaplanes. The Surcouf can do nineteen knots on the surface and twelve submerged. She has a range of 13,000 miles without refuelling.
