PROGRESS IN THE WEST

Charles Diamond, aa Otago reuresentative Eugby forward of 1887 and 1888, who is now manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia in Perth revisited Dunedin after an absence of many years. After leaving here in the 'eighties, he played for Victoria in inter-State .matches and took the field against New South Wales when that State had a team to be reckoned with. "A big effort is being made to keep the Eugby banner flying in Western Australia," said Mr. Diamond. Mr. Diamond is vice-president of the Western Australian Eugby Union, of which the president is Colonel Fitzgerald, of the "Sunday Times." There are .'two grades, senior and junior, and the standard of play is quite a. good one. "Undoubtedly we would welcome a visit from a New Zealand team," said Mr. Diamond, "and perhaps as the game progresses that may come to pass iv the future. The biggest step in establishing the game in the far Western State has been the arousing of interest among the youth and the fact that many of the schools are taking up the game is a happy augury; for the future."
