BIG INCREASE

MOTOR-CAR IMPORTATIONS

FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS

(Special to "The Evening Post.") AUCKLAND, This Day. All records in motor vehicle importations have been eclipsed during the first j nine months of this year. The dutiable value of all classes of vehicles was £3,279,936, as compared with £1,080,483 in the January-September period last year, and £1,424,850 in 1927. The last three mouths of the year are usually characterised by rising car sales, and it is certain that an unprecedented peak! will bo attained by the close of the I year. • ■ | The following are the details of the j dutiable values of ears, chassis, aiid commercial vehicles imported during the first three quarters of 1928 and 1929, together with the country of origin:— -

The imports covered in all 22,605 vehicles, of which commercial types numbered 4384. The 18,221 classified as ears included 643 chassis without bodies. The increase iv cars was'Bo per cent, over the 192S totals, while the 1928 imports were 34 per cent, higher than those for the.corresponding three quarters of 1927. .„. CANADA'S BI» ADVANCE. The greatest increases were in Canadian and British cars. Canadiaa imports were more than four times lasjt year's figures. There are special reasons for the exceptional figure. The largest selling Canadian ear was out of production for part of last year, an,d another factor is that additional cars have qualified for the Canadian tariff. English cars and car chassis imported in the nine months numbered 2723, an increase of nearly 67 per cent, on lastyear's number. Following are the numbers *of cars and car chassis combined imported in the first three quarters of each year:—

Commercial vehicles imported this year to date total just four times the number for the corresponding period for 1928. America easily leads in the commercial motor market, and for reasons applying also to cars Canada has multiplied the 1928 figures many times. There was a substantial rise in demand for British trucks and bus chassis, but continental makes are negligible. Following are details of trucks and commercial chassis imported during the nine months of the pa«t three years:—
