NURSING GUILD

THE AKNTJAL MEETING

The thirtieth annual meeting of the District Nursing Guild of St. John took place on Monday, when the Mayor (Mr. 61' A. Troup) presided. The Mayor, in moving the adoption of the repOTt and balance-sheet, paid a tribute to the lasting qualities of the gniia/'snd said he looked back on the work-"of this and similar societies ■ for the- last forty-two years. During that period he had seen.'many societies come into being and die, but where there were persistent workers there the society lived and flourished. The Society of St. John was the most persistent of all, and this branch of it was found going on from strength to strength. The work of the society was definitely fixed and the report must:be much, the same from year to year. This year's work was as good as ever. The society had many old workers still among it, but it was pleasing, too, to find new workers coming in. From all of these good results could be expected. As Mayor of tho city he wished to testify to the good work done and to the saving •to the rates for which the guild was responsible. The work, however, was of much greater, value than could be assessed on a monetary basis. The nurses brought comfort and hope as well as good nursing to many homes.

In seconding the motion. Dr. J. S. Elliott paid a tribute to the splendid ■work done by the district nurses of the guild. The record of the low mortality compared to the number of cases showed what fine work was being done. As the' city-grow the necessity for the work would boeoine greater, and there ■was room for an increase in the guild.

Mr. Jack, president of St. John Amtmlance Association, also paid a tribute to the work done by the Tadies, and in his remarks was seconded by Colonel Powles.

Mr. C. M. Luke (chairman of the "Wellington Hospital Board) congratulated the St. John Association on its increased prosperity, and. also spoke highly of the work of the guild. The

first claim of the indigent was on those

who could help to appease their sickiness and suffering. The District Nursing Guild helped the hospital not only toy keeping people out of the hospital, but by enabling them to leave hospital early, because they could bo looked pfter in their own homes. In his opinion the nurses of the Order were not adequately paid. . He felt sure the "work would soon require another nurse, and he assured.the guild that while he was on the Hospital Board he would do what he could do to help.

Sister Gray gave an account of the "work of the nurses amongst the sick poor, and Mrs. Stace, president, spoke.
