FOR THE NEW OIL WHARF

The Harbour Board staff is at present busy, near the-northern end of the Thorndoir breastwork, .with the splicing of Australian hardwood logs to form the piles; SO to 90 feet lon£. for the new oil. wharf, for Point Howard. The method of splicing ia similar to that used when the. Miramar Wharf extension was built, and is necessary, as single trunks of sufficient length are not obtainable in quantity. The splice itself wiil be driven well below the surface of the muddy sea bottom, and the jointed piles will, it is stated, have a life practically as long as of a straightout pile of full length. " The- wharf will bo primarily for the use of oil tankers, and is not intended for the" reception or exporting of general cargo, and therefore will be of no great width, the approach being only 14 feet across. It is understood that a second'set of oil tanks is to be erected on the Eastern Hutt industrial area,.close to Point Howard and the present installation, but the company concerned will continue to operate its Miramar installation as its main system, the new tanks being intended for the handling of bulk oils from tanker to rail, which /• cannot be clone directly at Miramar.
