EXTENSION IN BRITAIN
ELECTIONS TO-DAY
British Ollk-ial Wireless. ■ _ KUGBY, 31st October. , The ratepayers in 3(50 provincial boroughs in England and Wales will tomorrow elect one-third of tho members of tho municipal councils. Most of the scats falling vacant are being contested by Labour candidates. Tlic municipal authoritcs have been assigned extensive powers, including the protection of the health of the community, tho administration of the educational system, the provision of social amenities of various kinds, and tho care of child life and the poor and aged, in addition to the administration of municipal undertakings, such as gas. water, tramways, electricity, housing, markets, and baths. Particular importance is attached to this year's elections in, view of the forthcoming alterations of the administration whereby in a few months work hitherto done by separately elected boards of guardians will b& transferred to the larger municipal and countycouncils.
